Dataset met miljarden wachtwoorden verschijnt online

Een lijst met 8,4 miljard wachtwoorden is online gepubliceerd op een hackersforum. Het gaat om wachtwoorden die vermoedelijk zijn buitgemaakt bij eerdere datalekken. Het lijkt niet om een nieuw datalek te gaan.

Dit meldt CyberNews. De gebruikers die de lijst heeft gepubliceerd stelt zelfs dat de dataset 82 miljard wachtwoorden omvat. CyberNews stelt echter op basis van een eigen test dat het gaat om aanzienlijk minder wachtwoorden; de website houdt het op 8,4 miljard stuks. Het datalek wordt door een gebruikers van het hackersforum RockYou2021 genoemd. Dit is vermoedelijk een verwijzing naar een omvangrijk datalek bij gameontwikkelaar RockYou in 2009.

'Extreem zorgwekkend'

Dave Russel, VP of Enterprise Strategy bij Veeam, zegt over het datalek: "This leak is extremely concerning, and while authentication details and passwords are posted publicly, often due to the fact that data breaches are unfortunately a regular occurrence, it’s the sheer number of passwords that have been leaked that makes this notable. What it tells us is there is real value to organisations of taking data management and digital hygiene seriously. Regularly changing passwords, using other measures like multi-factor authentication where available, as well as keeping on top of where data is being stored exactly, are all measures to help reduce the impact of such leaks. If businesses don’t get on top of their digital hygiene and manage things properly, they’ll face more shadow IT issues and an increase in the corresponding risk of being breached."
